Just wanted to let everyone know what happened when we phoned to get information.  First we'll start with the RCMP.  They were just at the site with conservation manitoba when the clean up was done to make sure nobody interferred.    Consumers Bureau have nothing to do with the case.  They just told us to contact our vet for a refund, if the vet wouldn't give refund then phone them back.  Conservation Manitoba made sure the animals in the  freezers were taken care of and Vet Association notified owners.  Also Conservation Manitoba handed over their files to a crown attorney to see if Gail Harrison should be charged for breaking environmental laws (harzardous waste disposal).  There was no paperwork to let us know what happened to our dog once she left the vets office.  We have the name of the employee who picked her up but no one will provide us with any information.  Some people are obtaining lawyers.  We just wanted to know what you hoped to get out of it.  What are your lawyers telling you?  If no one can provide us with answers and Gail won't be charged with what she did to the animals then are you just trying to get your money back?  We don't have a lawyer and before we start to look for one we just want to know if it would be worth it.

I do have a lawyer, but haven't proceeded with pressing any charges. I did get a refund from the vet but that doesn't amount up to the heart ache that has been caused to not only myself, but others as well. I do not want to see Gail get away with anything. I did not get me Meeka back as promised, I have no idea where she is and never will!! When I spoke to the Manitoba Bureau, they told me that I cannot personally charge Gail. I would have to go through a class action lawsuit. There is no law that governs pet cemetaries. But it's different for humans. Which is bull shit!!

I treat my animals as if they are my kids! To have someone take her and dispose of her at her own choice, makes me angry to no extent!!! It's been since August since I found out and nothing has been done but getting a refund! I could care or less about the money. I'm tired of seeing people get a slap on the wrist and walking away with a grin from ear to ear... Makes me sick!

Her comment.."I feel we did nothing wrong". If you did nothing then where is she?!?!?!?! Why don't I have her!! Why is nothing being done? Oh wait, I forgot it takes 2-3 years before anything goes to court these days.... I'm not about to sit around and wait for that period of time. She better stay in hiding....

Sorry, I'm getting a little pissed off...
I understand, I'm angry and upset too. It will be one year Nov. 7th that we lost our Ginger. I'm still having trouble accepting that shes gone, and after all the phone calls my husband and I made where people can't and won't help you. It doesn't look like there was any paperwork to say what happened once she left the vets office. I'm having a hard time wondering what happened to her. Was she mass cremated or is she in one of those pits. I will never get those answers and I guess I'll just have to try to accept that. It upsets me so much because we loved her and she was a part of our family, we took very good care of her and of course she was spoiled rotten. She just deserved better than this. Someone had posted that there are seven pits. I'm really hoping we can all go out there as a group. We did get our money refunded from the vet. Big deal I didn't want it. We cashed the cheque and we're donating the money to the humane society.

me too

I have the same story and found nobody will help or do anything. No laws and yet all agencies and everyone hopes everything will go away. Simply amazing isn't it. All I was hoping was that she would get charged with Fraud or something.

I hear the anguish in each of your messages and I am so sorry for all of us who have animals missing at Misty Gardens. I have been to the cemetery several times and have said many prayers each time. No one has bothered me at all. I would agree that there are at least 7 mass graves because there are many large square areas of the cemetery where the ground has been disturbed. Who knows how many pits have grown over and are no longer visible.
As one of the people working on the petition, I have been reading and re-reading and reading again many of the provincial acts. It is difficult to realize that there is not an act specific to animal cremation and burial. That is why it is imperative that we work together to present a petition to the Legislative Assembly to prevent another horror such as this one. I have no idea if it is reasonable to get a lawyer. I guess that would depend on your goal. In a perfect world the powers that be would lock up Gail and at least one certain Manitoba veterinarian and throw away the key. But this is not a perfect world. Again if anyone has any ideas, jot them down and soon we will meet to review them for the petition. Good luck.

Just curious...
Which vet? Why?
I know many have been caught up in this, but understood that they were not really aware of what was going on. At least the full extent of it. In my mind - the fraud falls to Gail, Unless a vet had specific knowledge.

vet???

Just wondered why the vet was caught up in this, and I really would like to know if possible which one in case it is one I had chosed many years ago.
I think it is only fair we know, so we can make perhaps a decision with full knowledge. My gosh this just keeps getting worse and worse. Beside doing coffee meetings what can we do, and how many people are actually wanting to do something.

Some people have said they want to do the class action lawsuit. I don't have a lawyer. Does anyone have a lawyer that they would like to use? Lets all decide on a lawyer and then get started already and not let anymore time go by. Also I think it was the vet association that had said some vetinarian had gone out there and witnessed a cremation and it had passed inspection. I think our lawyer could probably find out their name. They'd have to be questioned because you have to be very smart to be a vetinarian and how could this place pass inspection. I think even the average person wouldn't let it pass.

Vet.

I had a long chat with my vet and he said to his knowledge the business was being run properly the cremation part anyway until the end of May!!!! What is a person to do, we have no proof that it is not our boy in the urn, I am sure if he was in the pit any one of them, he would not be identifiable by now, what are we to do, Gail has to live with this as I don;t think there is anymore any of us can do, I think our only hope is to try and get major changes into the legislation so nothing can be swept under the carpet again. My boy went to Domestic on May 10th and to my vet's knowledge he was an honest man and did what was required of each animal that came into his care. I am not just dropping out but what is there to be done? We are told Gail can't be charged right, or am I reading things wrong, I just don't know anymore.
As I posted earlier our dog Ginger died Nov. 7/06 and we sent some samples from our urn to HealthGene Corp dna lab in Toronto. The results came back positive for dog. We then sent Gingers dna, a whisker with a skin tag on it to the lab. They created a dna profile and the results came back that it was not our dog. There was no problems from our vet tagging our dog as we spoke to them about their tagging process. We have a letter from our vet saying which employee of domestic animal picked her up. So the trail ends there as there is no paperwork to tell what happened when she left the vet. But people have been getting back the wrong ashes long before May.

vet

thanks for your reply, I understand what you are saying as I read all the posts so far and I know that everything did not go bad overnite at domestic,misty... I think the whole thing stinks!!!! I was just saying what my vet expressed to me.

Why did it pass inspection?

The answer to that is pretty basic. The vet going out phones ahead to ensure someone will be on-site to carry out the cremation they're going to witness. No staff, no cremation. Well obviously, they tidy the place up and do perfectly what they're paid to do.....on that specific occasion. Same as the Province going out to re-accredit nursing homes every year. The facility knows ahead when and once again, gets the door knobs and tap handles all polished up and the body waste and waste-soiled bedding and clothing are neatly tucked away just before the inspector arrives. I saw a flurry of activity at my Mom's n/home, asked, and was told "We're being being inspected by the Province this afternoon."
Surprise inspections? We wish!!

Sorry all. Didn't mean to stir up anything with my comment about the vet. My vet to this day is denying that anything is wrong at Misty Gardens. He insists that all is well at the crematorium and that my dog was mass cremated mid summer as requested. He has made some cruel and inappropriate remarks concerning my dog since and his actions are even worse. If my heart broke when my dog died, it broke again with his cruelty. My apologies.

vet

Please please don't feel bad I only was surprised to actually see that a vet had that little compassion, or being of little help, I also don't know what to think my vet knows gail personally as he did her father, and I don't think I can trust him again with another animal, this whole thing is cruel, and you did not stir anything up at this point everything is total tense. Of course the vets are going to cover their own butts and say everything was ok what else can they say. I am so sorry about your dog also, my heart breaks for everyone because I can totally relate..
please accept my apology if I made you feel upset.

Re: vet

No apology necessary. I wasn't upset at all. Just feeling a little sheepish that I may have stirred up something negative regarding Manitoba veterinarians, and that wasn't my intention. I have switched to a wonderful vet who came highly recommended, and I adore him. I wish I had him prior to this mess. I think it is the first vet's indifference that is driving me to make change.
By the way, we will be needing a photo of some of the pets that were sent to Misty Gardens for our presentation. Can you all look through your photos, choose a favorite, download one on to your computer, and hold on to it until we are ready to receive them? You will need to realize that they will be publicized when we are ready to make our presentation. Thanks J for your concern.

Re: vet

Thank you,
When you don't talk to people in person at least myself I am so afraid of saying anything that will be taken wrong especially with all of us on pins and needles so thank you for being kind. As far as pictures you let me know and I certainly will have whatever you need.

Thanks again.

Re: vet

A large vet clinic on Pembina Hwy stopped using DAC in late 2004 or early 2005 because they did not like the service they were getting from Harrison's company?
Why did they stop and did they inform any other vets as to why? Did they even inform the other vets in their own association? (See yellow pages of phone book, full page ad.)
If they suspected somthing was wrong what was it? Did they inspect the place? Were pets going missing at that point?
There was a Vet from that clinic that did come out to the Cemetery to bring individual pets that had been euthanised at the owners home on house calls. What did he see and did that have anything to do with their dropping the use of DAC? It would be interesting to find some answers, but I doubt any vet will talk. Any Vet Techs with a heart out there that have any knowledge of this?

Re: vet

Sadly I am afraid every vet will keep whatever information they may or may no have to themself it would really open a large can of worms if there was questionable stuff going on they will protect their own butts for sure, I also doubt any vet will talk or try to staighten this out, my own vet protected Gail Harrison, up till he left this summer.

I haven't read all of the threads so I dont know if i am repeating anything but is there anyway people can post pictures of their pets on this group just so we can put faces to all of the animals everyone has lost???

(Anonymous)

I don't know if that is possible here. However,
Lawrence Hurd, the man who made the incredible video of his dog Thunder (who was killed by someone on a skidoo), has set up on facebook.
When you go there, he has many photos posted of the animals who were sent to Misty Gardens.
Perhaps you would like to go there and send a photo to him.
Speaking of photos, we are now ready to receive photos of your pets for our presentation for the petition. A website has been set up at:
petsofmisty@yahoo.com
If you would like your pets photo to possibly be used in our presentation, please send one photo to that email address. If you wish, please include the dates of birth and death, and your pet's name. Also please include a note that gives us permission to use the photo. Some photos may be used in a memorial video. If anyone has photos taken of the horrors that were witnessed at Misty Gardens in July and August, or anytime, we might use those as well. The presentation is coming along slowly, with all the research being done, however it is moving along. Thank you all.
